Born in Cuba and raised in Miami after the age of 10, he started lifting weights in high school while on the football team. He considered entering physique contests but decided that he did not want to lose his independence to the sponsor that it would require. He did posing for a photographer in Miami but it was two photo shoots for Colt incorporated into one of the Gallery magazines that made him famous.
